European Workshop on Future Utilization of Geothermal Energy in Urban Areas
European specialists discuss the future use of geothermal energy in urban areas at the first European geothermal workshop. The main topics of discussion are the state of the art, current and upcoming projects as well as solutions for future developments.
Jasmin Battista (European Commission - Energy, Member of the Cabinet) and the organizers, Prof. Dr. Eberhard Umbach, President of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Prof. Dr. Reinhard Hüttl, chairman of the board and scientific director of the Deutsches Geoforschungszentrum (GFZ) did welcome the participants.
Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Ladislaus Rybach from ETH Zurich spoke on sustainable geothermal energy supply in urban areas.
In further lectures, European flagship projects were presented:
- Geothermal production in the Paris Basin – the largest urban utilization in Europe (Eric Lasne, CFG Services, General Manager)
- Geothermal energy in the Munich metropolitan area (Dr. Erwin Knapek, Former Mayor of Unterhaching, Wirtschaftsforum Geothermie e.V. (WFG) and Dr.-Ing. Christian Pletl, Stadtwerke München GmbH)
- Geothermal heat for Vienna (DI Dr. Michael Kotschan, Geothermiezentrum Aspern GmbH, Vienna, Director)
- European showcase project Soultz-sous-Forêts / Strasbourg (Dr. Albert Genter, G.E.I.E. EMC, Scientific Coordinator and Dr. Thomas Kölbel, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, Research and Innovation, Senior Manager)
The workshop was under the patronage of European Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger, who concluded the event with a political keynote speech.
